Brief insight to yes, My brother Khyle was looking at taking up a martial art, he tried a karate class and then went to Mr Carter’s Tae Kwon-Do class. I went along and the first time I went I think he joined in and I stayed at the side and watched. Then before I knew it we were both in dobok’s and training together. I quickly started to enjoy lessons and all aspects from patterns and sparring to line work and step sparring – thriving to be an all-rounder like Mr Carter. From blue belt, Khyle and I started training 4 times a week – twice in Rugby and twice in Lutterworth. This improved both of us vastly, our fitness and skill went up a level and we made more friends and enjoyed training with different people.
Together we took our 1st Dan’s together in October 2009. I then began competing a bit more regularly, doing a few tournaments in juniors and winning occasionally in patterns or sparring. Around this time the two of us began going to pad training and as brutal as they were – they were brilliant, we got faster and sharper and were dying by the end of it. Pad training helped a lot on the competitive side and I became consistent on the competitive side; normally winning in either patterns or sparring in the cadets division, striving to win both
We then took our 2nd Dan’s together in October 2013, after achieving all 3 stars at 1st Dan. We then continued to compete and train for a number of years. During this time I then completed my umpire’s course, and later referees course, becoming a fully qualified referee in February 2020.
In October 2019 I took my 3rd Dan grading after a long 6 years – the first grading without my brother alongside me. I now train regularly and hope to compete and referee in more tournaments and help students of the club as much as I can.
Finally I’d like to say thank you to Mr Patrick Carter, for years he has been a brilliant instructor, mentor and friend. He has had such a big impact on myself and Khyle, watch us grow up from when we were kids and always supported us. He has always taught us the importance of respect not just to our parents and seniors, but to everyone. We would not be half as good as we are if it was not for his teaching, guidance and passion for Tae Kwon-Do. As serious as he is, he is one of the funniest people you can meet as well as a big wind up! I would also like to thank Ms Karen Phillips 5th Dan(Squeaks) for all her help, guidance and teaching through my Tae Kwon-Do journey, who like Mr Carter, has been an inspiration to me.
Thank you World Master Pat, look forward to these next 14 years of training with you and mum still calling you ‘sir’ as well, despite never training.
World Master Carter.
Thank you Prien for a brief history of your TKD journey.
I would like to say its been a privilege to have you in the club and Kyle . Always polite in glass and willing to help when needed. Carnt remember ever telling you both off in all the time since you started, that says it all. A very good all rounder as I say, which is Tae Kwon Do as it should be done.
Thank you Prien
Who would you like next month on the champions page?………….
